End of Year Letter from PTA President

Dear KP Families and Community Members,

As the school year winds down, I wanted to reach out to the KP community on behalf of the KPPTA. This has been a trying time in many ways, and certainly not the beginning to 2020 that we expected...but overcoming challenges can make us stronger, and it’s important now more than ever that we rise to meet these challenges we face.

In keeping with the PTA’s mission to “make every child’s potential a reality by engaging and empowering families and communities to advocate for all children,” KPPTA denounces the killing of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, and others who needlessly lost their lives; and we affirm that Black Lives Matter. There is no place in our community for racism, bigotry, antisemitism, homophobia, xenophobia, or hatred of any kind. Let’s all commit to fighting racism and bias. We need to stand up and demand justice, amplify voices that have been silenced for too long, and ensure that our schools are a safe place for our students of color and their families. Our Diversity & Inclusion committee is already hard at work on this, and we welcome you to join us and participate in the dialogue moving forward. KP Leadership and MCPS will continue to share resources for families as well.

On behalf of the PTA Board, I would like to thank our teachers, staff and administration for pivoting to create a distance learning plan that has kept our kids connected. Hopefully we’ll all be back together at KP in the Fall. I also want to share my congratulations to our graduating 5th graders and their families. We wish them the best of luck as they continue on to middle school.

The coronavirus pandemic has made it difficult for the PTA to gather in person, and unfortunately the Maryland PTA continues to forbid us from having online PTA meetings and holding elections. Because of this, we will have to delay the election for next year’s PTA Board until membership can meet in person (likely this Fall). In the meantime, current board members who wish to continue in their role for a second year (allowed per our bylaws) will remain in their positions until an election by membership can be held in person. Those board members who will not be continuing in their role next year will resign before the end of the 2019-2020 school year and a replacement will be temporarily elected by the Executive Board (allowed per our bylaws). These replacement volunteers will fill the role until an election by membership can be held in person. I share this information with you in pursuit of full transparency; should anything change, I will share that information with you as well.

Thank you for giving me the opportunity to serve as your PTA President. I look forward to leading our parent community in the coming school year, if you’ll allow me to. I know we have a lot of work to do, but I believe we can do it together. I have so much gratitude for everyone who served and volunteered this year, and I am excited to work with all of our dedicated parent volunteers in the months ahead.

Lastly, I would like to share the words of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. which remind us to lead with positivity and kindness: “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.”

Wishing everyone a summer filled with unity, light and love.

Anna Sachs, KPPTA President

Teams can present videos that are edited together or will be posted together (Please indicate in your video who is part of your team). Anything works for the virtual science fair, and a poster is not required.
